put together words.

These are some I wrote, thinking back.
Paraplegic
The paraplegic
unable to leave his bed
but with mind racing.
Elephant Man
The Elephant man
Different from the ones he loves
can’t come out to play.
Go forward on faith,
riding on the wings of angels,
to your appointment.

Today was our first outing after returning to the hospital with infection, being there 6 days, and leaving to be at our daughter’s the last 7 days. Getting to a doctor’s appt. with hopping on walker down 2 steps and getting into the back seat, a 40-minute car ride, Carol getting out wheelchair from the trunk, putting it together, AL getting out of the car, standing with walker to pivot around and sit in wheelchair, then Carol wheeling him up to 3rd floor……, doing the same thing to get back home & to the bed, it’s been quite a day. ALL this for a former soccer athlete who played so long they called him “El Viejo” on the field.
Love has carried us
up mountains and through valleys
to a sea of calm.
Standing on one leg
he inspects his growing beard
signs of his manhood.
Climbing down two steps
from house to garage to car
Boston marathon.
Recurring nightmares
of injury and falling
more real than the real.

Pain at 5am,
Pain meds block reality,
It lies underneath.
Sounds of family
Voices, laughter, baby’s cries,
Call us back to health.
Hands moving in space,
Picking nothing from the air,
Flinging stars and light.

Al, in dreams while on meds, is either have nightmares or conversations. For awhile, every time he was asleep, he would lift his arms and be moving them back and forth, his fingers twitching. I once asked him, “What are you doing?” He said, “Flinging stars and light back into the sky.”
