Thomas the Train

October 3, 2009

Well, today was spent at the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC where we met and rode on Thomas the Train with Leah & Zakiah. Too tired to write all about that, but basically, totally a money-maker and millions of kids, and noise all day long, but very fun for the kids. People are so funny. They are told to sing on the train and they start singing. We just do what we’re told to do. Totally annoying little shows like w/ Bob the Builder dancing……. but some very cool, huge old locomotives, and a gigantic model train display that was elaborate. All kinds of train stuff for kids to do. The Thomas the Train sets were running a cold $50 bucks, but I found a nice, metal, classic train set for $20. for Zakiah. Runs on 2 double-A’s. The FUNNEL CAKE was totally awesome!

There was a huge Thomas made totally out of lego’s which was pretty cool, and a not-so-bad band that played James Brown’s “I feel good” w/o the words, until it got to “So good, so good” and the kids were supposed to blow 2 toots on their train whistles…..

We head out to Orangeburg tomorrow for a Baha’i Unit Convention, where we elect a full 8 delegates to the National Convention. I’m trying to think of 8 total Bahai’s I know down here w/ both first and last name. thomas

short obligatory prayer

September 3, 2009

I was just going through the short obligatory prayer that Bahai’s say daily, & had a few thoughts.

“I bear witness, O my God…”

1st line made me think of the tradition in Christian belief, to “witness” for God and for Jesus. To witness is to give praise to God publicly, talk about your belief in the open with others. Bear witness to your faith. So we start out by doing this.

“…that Thou hast created me, to know Thee and to worship Thee.”

Our purpose. What we were created for. It explains our relationship to the Creator. We are not the Creator, but the creation, which is a relief because it tells me, we don’t have to know everything, or understand it all. We can accept imperfection. Somehow in our worship of God the Creator, we gain a closer sense of true love, and what Perfection is.

Next line. “I testify, at this moment,”

Testify. Speak — do not be silent. There is a gospel song in the back of my mind about testifyin’. We are living in the present, in this moment. Not in the past, for that is gone, and not in the future but right now. What we do in this moment determines how the future will go.

“… to my powerlessness, and to Thy might,”

The first step in any 12-step program is to recognize one’s own powerlessness. Powerlessness, in some cases, is a good thing. We are again affirming our station, not as the Almighty but as the creation who can continually progress toward perfection. There is always more to learn. Leaning upon the Mighty will guide us to the next step, whatever it is.

“… to my poverty, and to Thy wealth.”

Poverty and wealth in a spiritual sense. Poverty is never the cause of degradation in any religious book. Only poverty of spirit. Somehow we are responsible for that. Baha’u’llah elsewhere says, “Tell the rich of the midnight sighing of the poor,” and in another place, “If poverty overtake thee, be not sad; for in time the Lord of wealth shall visit thee.”

And the prayer ends with, “There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.”

There is only one God. This is a statement we really do not believe today. All those prayers being said to God, from those in so many faiths, really do rise to only One. The One. The Only.

“The help in peril,” which in itself is telling us we are not protected from danger. Danger, peril, these things will touch us. What is always promised is that He IS the HELP in these times. He will help us. We are never without help, never left alone, no matter what. That is the promise.

“the Self Subsisting.” There is only one God, and He is always far and above the rest of creation. He is in fact, Self-Subsisting. We are the opposite. We cannot exist on our own, and in fact, die if left alone. We are made as social creatures, and a human baby one of the most vulnerable of infants, over a long period of time. And yet, we are bathed in His love at all times. We may choose to not turn towards it, but that does not mean it is not there. “I loved Thy creation, hence I created thee . . . Wherefore, do thou love Me … that I may name thy name, and fill thy soul with the spirit of life.”

“I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee, and to worship Thee. I testify at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.”

Faith and Boundless Love

August 25, 2009

Faith and Boundless Love

Whatever trials come to us,

They have seen it more,

No matter what we’re going through,

They have gone before,

The Holy Ones,

Those blessed Souls,

Whom Mighty God

could save from harm,

were exposed to the worst

of humanity,

Been called a name?

Degraded and scorned?

An old woman begged to throw a stone,

He said, “Do not deprive her of what she sees

as an act of God.”

Have you lost a job? Or even your home?

All the riches they owned were given to thieves,

Assiyih Khanum

selling the last of her finery,

for sugar and flour to make some bread.

Have you felt the sting of a Winter’s night?

They travelled for weeks,

unprotected from cold,

melting the ice

to quench their thirst.

All that we can imagine,

They suffered worse,

Even the loss of a beloved son,

plunging to his death,

through an open skylight,

while saying his midnight prayers,

His Father, distraught,

asked what were his son’s wishes?

To sacrifice himself,

so that others could behold his Father’s face,

now weeping by his side.

Family members rejecting

your pure-hearted care?

This too, they felt,

as one by one they turned away

from the sweet-mannered Shoghi Effendi,

Poverty, rejection,

Madness, violence,

Indescribable loss,

Imprisonment,

Loneliness?

Imagine the blessed Bab,

Locked in the mountain fortress

of Mah-Ku,

All these They faced,

while on this earth,

And through it all, Faith!

And boundless LOVE,

God’s grace and gifts are infinite,

Whatever we face,

They went before,

With Faith and boundless Love.

(In)Justice in Iran

July 9, 2009

I am thinking today of the 7 souls, 7 adults, men and women, who were arrested in Iran one year ago, just for being members of the Baha’i Faith. There is no reason for it but abuse, ignorance and persecution of the loved ones of God. They lead exemplary lives. Baha’is do not partake in politics. We believe in the unity of humankind, equality of women and men, education for all. These are the crimes of humanity in today’s world. I would say in today’s Iran, but the Bahai’s are used to severe persecution in their homeland ever since it began there in 1844. God love them, and God give them strength and bestowals of His mercy and grace, to withstand this injustice.

‘O Son of Spirit! The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not through the knowledge of thy neighbour. Ponder this in thy heart; how it behoveth thee to be. Verily justice is My gift to thee and the sign of My loving-kindness. Set it then before thine eyes.’

study circles

June 23, 2009

I miss sharing heart to heart at study circles. Bahai’s have a workshop-type of “study” where we go through a book together, study Holy Writings, dissect their meaning and what they mean to us, pray together, share thoughts, play games, study the lives of the Prophets, memorize some of our favorite passages together. It brings a group close together in spirit.

Going to a Baha’i Center for a monthly meeting, even with prayers, doesn’t even come close. It is like going to church and sitting, vs. a prayer meeting. Even getting together at a feast in a home for formal readings and prayers is not the same. In a study circle, you meet weekly, you are committed to finishing the book together, and somehow it opens hearts to each other. I haven’t felt that for a year now, and it is greatly missed.
