December 22, 2024

Leaves in the water,
hide the fish
hide the turtles
tell us how hard it rained last night,
the trees now nearly bare,
even in South Carolina,
where we have change of seasons,
but not ice and snow,
they shed their clothes without shame,
stand naked in the cold
will don new outfits in the Spring.

Wintry day South Carolina

December 11, 2024

Wintry day,
South Carolina,
Gray skies and falling rain,
More leaves on the ground than on the trees,
branches glisten orange and red,
Stumps of some cut off just below
where Helene broke off the rest,
Loplolly pines stand above, swaying in the breeze,
Birds up there are unaware of all of us below,
warm at 65 degrees, one can enjoy
the screened-in porch, with a jacket on,
I think of many winters past,
snow and ice that does not melt,
snow piled into mountains
children try to climb,
but now we’re here,
in South Carolina,
Wintry days of falling rain,
sitting on my back porch
hearing it hit my window pane,
watching squirrels, deer and birds,
who don’t know how very lucky they are
to be southern.

Trees

November 19, 2024

Trees don’t care who’s President,

They just want to live another day

to reach up toward the Sun.

So do people.

I cry for you, America

November 12, 2024

I cry for you, America,

home of the brave, land of the free,

I cry for you, America,

it is of thee that I sing,

O beautiful, for spacious skies,

for amber waves of grain,

Our National Parks will be ripped apart,

there is money to be made.

We are a nation of immigrants,

have we forgotten on whose land we stand?

Our forefathers took land from others

who were here, before we were,

still others came in slavery

to build our economy,

their backs were broken in southern fields,

their children sold away,

so this is not the first time

people have suffered in your name,

America, home of the brave,

the world’s icon for liberty,

America, I weep for a nation

still blind to your own cruelty.

Hurricane Helene

October 11, 2024

As Helene rips through the park

uprooting trees

obstructing our view

they start falling,

but as they fall, screaming,

they reach out for one another,

and now, in each other’s arms,

they hold each other up,

until the chainsaws come.

Hurricane Helene, Columbia SC, Friday 9-27-24, we had only wind. A tornado ripped through our park — that is our belief — based on the numerous trees ripped from the ground, large ones blocking our view, laying across the path, hiding the basketball court and community center.

I’m afraid

September 24, 2024

I’m afraid we’ll go further backward

before we go forward,

I’m afraid we are destroying the earth,

I’m afraid that people are filling with hatred,

the war will escalate beyond control,

I’m afraid of persecution, and people believing

a liar’s lies, a racist rant,

The lies blame everyone but himself,

convince people our friends are enemies,

breathe tension into an already polluted air,

because WEALTH is drowning out compassion,

and people believe anything said to them

without thinking for themselves.

I’m afraid of corruption, and altering the vote,

afraid of coral reefs being destroyed,

afraid for the loss of clean water and air,

National Parks, and wildlife refuge.

but a candle shines more brightly

when LIT in darkness,

Love beats more strongly

when surrounded by hate,

No matter if liars try to breed hatred,

the reality is that we are ONE,

We are ONE people, We have ONE homeland,

We all say prayers to ONE God above,

“This is FAITH, to walk where there is no path,

to breathe where there is no air,”**

I will care for animals that cross my path,

I will reach out to humans who are hurting,

I will do my best to keep a candle lit,

even while hurricane winds are blowing.

“Hurricane” Debby haiku

August 6, 2024

A dark clouds morning,
only lightly dripping rain,
Debby came to visit.

Enough is enough

July 13, 2024

If anything keeps me up at night

besides worrying about my kids,

it’s worrying I haven’t done enough,

no matter how much I did.

Enough connecting,

making friends,

caring for someone in need,

enough praying,

painting, reading,

texting grandkids,

But who decides, what is enough?

what if I’ve done what I could?

I HAVE done SOMETHING, even if small,

We are not perfect,

we don’t have to do it all,

and I may need to learn

what’s enough relaxation?

enough free time,

for just being me,

staying in tune with my own body

and doing what it needs,

taking more time for other things

— and enough time for SLEEP.

I love you all

July 7, 2024

Dear peoples of the world,

I love you all.

I love the different shades of us,

all the different ways of us,

those who worship, those who don’t,

those who eat meat, those who won’t,

mothers nursing their newly born,

old ones who won’t leave their homes,

North South East and West,

which part of the world do you love best?

The tropics, where it’s always warm,

or Northern lands of ice and snow,

Dark brown, cinnamon, tan, and light,

Blue eyes, Brown eyes, looking bright,

Let’s stop the madness, stop the games,

End the needless suffering,

End the wars and children’s cries,

End the never ending lies,

Our leaders left it up to us,

WE must come together, at all costs,

What is more powerful than greed or fear?

LOVE and COMPASSION for all you see, and hear.

Surnames ancestry

June 30, 2024

These are the origins of surnames found in my family tree, as of today. I did not know how heavily ENGLISH I was until doing this research, which I’ve been working on for many years, probably nearly 20 years now. This is actual research and not my DNA report. The DNA report is similar, but not this heavily British. What this means is, with having such heavily Western European, particularly ENGLISH heritage, my ancestors settled parts of Jamestown, VA; were one of the first 3 families to settle the area of Connecticut; and lived in Goochland VA, Henrico County VA, and other such places. NO ONE in South Carolina, but all those back into the 1600s in the north also owned slaves and dealt harshly with Native peoples. I will continue to study them, have only touched the surface, really, of those stories.
