I have an ancestor. Thomas Applegate who was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1635-40, operating a ferry there, but he and his wife got kicked out of it LOL. She had to put her tongue into a split “cleft stick”, some kind of punishment, for “cussing, reviling and railing”. Then they went to Rhode Island, from there to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (southern tip of Manhattan island NY) & then to Long Island English settlement of Gravesend.
His descendant was Carrie Bybee who married my great-grandfather James Agnew in New Albany IN.
